SEGUIN, Texas -- Schreiner's Matt Barnett and Ethan Catalani combined on a five-hit shutout Thursday in a 2-0 conference win over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs.
A sophomore right-hander, Barnett (4-6) worked seven scoreless innings before handing the ball to Catalani in the eighth. Catalani, a senior left-hander, did not allow a hit in his two-inning save.
At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, Schreiner (15-23, 6-10 SCAC) made a run in the second and a run in the third stand up against the Bulldogs, who dropped to 23-14 overall and to 9-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
TLU entered the day in third place in the SCAC, one game behind Centenary (La.) in the race for the conference tournament's No. 2 seed. Centenary hosts No. 3/9-ranked Trinity in a three-game series in Shreveport, La. on Friday and Saturday.
Schreiner's Marco Carreon hit a fielder's choice RBI in the second, and Ryan Pisseri tripled to score a run in the third.
The two Schreiner runs were enough to beat TLU senior right-hander
Dwayne Snider (New Caney/New Caney). Snider (5-3) allowed both runs in 7-2/3 innings against the Mountaineers. He allowed six hits and three walks, and he hit two batters.
Brett Clark (Vancouver, B.C./Semiahmoo Secondary) pitched the final 1-1/3 for TLU. Clark struck out one and did not allow a hit.
Christian DeBlanc (Kingwood/Kingwood) was the only Bulldog with more than one hit. DeBlanc went 2-for-4 with a double.
TLU left eight runners on base. The Bulldogs only struck out once but hit into 19 fly-ball outs.
The Bulldogs and Mountaineers conclude the 2014 regular season on Friday with a noon doubleheader, also at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field. TLU will have webcasts and live stats for both games on tlubulldogs.com.
