SEGUIN â€" The Texas Lutheran softball squad held Centenary to three hits in two games on its way to a doubleheader sweep in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Theos Morck Field at Ed Kruse Stadium.
Â
The Bulldogs have now won 11 straight games and finished off the four-game sweep of Centenary with 5-0 and 10-0 wins. The TLU pitching staff held Centenary scoreless in all 22 innings of the series and have now tossed 23 straight shutout innings.
Â
The two wins improved Texas Lutheran's record to 29-7 on the year and 21-1 in the SCAC. The Bulldogs already clinched the top spot in the conference standings with a pair of wins last night and will host the SCAC Championship beginning on Friday, April 25.
Â
Brand-new Kruse Stadium was formerly dedicated prior to Saturday's contests, with TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey giving a speech and welcoming Mr. Kruse and Ms. Terri Richter Morck to toss out the ceremonial first pitches.
Â
After the ceremony,
Samantha Yenne took the ball in the circle for the Bulldogs and frustrated Centenary hitters all day on her way to a complete-game one hitter. The one single was an infield one and it came in the first inning. After that, Yenne (Lake Jackson, Texas) was lights out, striking out four and improving to 7-2 on the year. It was the freshman's second complete game and first shutout of her career.
Â
The 5-0 win was the only time all series the two teams played more than five innings as the TLU offense invoked the eight-run rule in the other three contests.
Â
The Bulldog bats gave Yenne all the support she needed, scoring five runs on seven hits and three walks.
Â
Ashley Jacobsen(Marion, Texas) scored the game's first run, coming home on a wild pitch. She had reached base on a Centenary error.
Â
Maegan Taylor (Helotes, Texas) drove in two runs in the third inning, smashing a two-run single up the middle to score both
Grace Estes and
Jacquelyn Brown. Both Estes (Willis, Texas) and Brown (Vidor, Texas) were in the middle of the Bulldog offense all series, scoring 13 runs between the two of them. Estes finished 7-for-10 (.700) with six runs, while Brown finished 7-for-12 (.583) with seven runs.
Â
The Bulldogs ended the second game in five innings, scoring in all four frames they came up to bat. They cranked out 14 hits in the game while limiting Centenary to just two. Both Jacobsen and Estes finished a perfect 3-for-3 in the game.
Â
The majority of the damage came in the second and third innings when TLU scored seven runs. Three of those runs came in the second on the help of two Centenary errors. The Bulldogs scored four more in the third.
Â
Kimberly Leschber (Thorndale, Texas) improved to 8-2 on the year after getting the win in the circle. The junior tossed the game's first four innings, holding Centenary scoreless on just two hits while notching one strike out.
Â
Elyse Hlavinka (Bellville, Texas) came in to finish off the game, tossing the final inning and sitting the Ladies down in order.
Â
The Bulldogs outscored Centenary 37-0 in the series and are playing well heading into the conference tournament, having outscored opponents 99-12 in their last eight games.
