NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran softball team opened up its home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Calumet College St. Joseph on Wednesday afternoon at New Braunfels Canyon High School. The Bulldogs won game one 3-2 and game two 7-1.
Â
The pair of wins improved the Bulldogs' record to 4-4 on the year while Calumet dropped to 0-6 with the two losses.
Â
The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader held a wild finish and a walk-off ending for the Bulldogs. Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs and their offense, which had been held in check all game, came alive. With the help of a couple fielding errors by Calumet College, Texas Lutheran plated three in the final inning to steal the win.
Â
The winning run came across after
Jaime Ohm cracked a double to centerfield that squirted by a diving Julyssa Saez.
Hope Estes, who was on first after her RBI single had scored the first two runs of the game for the Bulldogs, advanced to third on the double. She was able to score as the Crimson Wave made an error trying to double off Ohm at second after Ohm had strayed a little too far from her base. The throw back to second trying to get Ohm glanced off the Calumet College shortstop Joanna Drew's glove and into centerfield, allowing Estes to score the game-winning run.
Â
As mentioned, Estes (Willis, Texas) drove in the first two runs, scoring
Grace Estes from second and
Heather Hummel from first. Hummel was able to score after
Hope Estes' single got away from the Crimson Wave centerfielder Julyssa Saez. The Bulldogs strung together two hits and a walk in the final inning.
Â
While the stunning turn of events in the seventh inning stole most of the attention, the comeback would not have been possible if not for the excellent work from Bulldog pitcher
Amanda Lochte (Fredericksburg, Texas). Making her first career start for the Bulldogs, the freshman twirled a gem, going the distance and allowing just two runs on five hits.
Â
The only damage allowed by Lochte came in the third inning when she allowed a two-run home run to right-center against Joanna Drew. After allowing that homer though, Lochte slammed the door, retiring the next 12 Crimson Wave hitters. The freshman allowed just one hit the rest of the game and struck out for on the day. It was the first complete game thrown by a Bulldog this season.
Â
Ohm (Frisco, Texas) had a big game in the first one, going 3-for-4 with that final double eventually plating the winning run. The Bulldogs as an offense scratched across nine hits and five walks. The score may have been more tilted in the Bulldogs' favor if TLU would not have stranded 11 runners on base for the game.
Â
Texas Lutheran carried the momentum gained from the seventh-inning comeback into the second game Tuesday, winning handedly 7-1. Once again, the pitching was good for the Bulldogs as
Taylor Grissom (Spring, Texas) got the start in the circle and didn't disappoint, earning the win and improving to 1-1 on the year. The sophomore threw five innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six.
Â
The big blow for the Bulldogs came in the fifth inning when they scored five runs. The offense racked up four hits in the inning and was aided by a pair of Crimson Wave errors.
Â
Jacobsen (Marion, Texas) finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to go along with that stolen base. Ohm had another productive game, as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Â
Texas Lutheran will match back up with Calumet tomorrow for another doubleheader at New Braunfels Canyon. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
