Jaime Ohm gave the Texas Lutheran softball squad its second walk-off win in its last three games, securing a 3-2 win over Trinity on Saturday and helping the Bulldogs to a split in the first doubleheader of a four-game SCAC series at Theos Morck Field at Ed Kruse Stadium.
Â
Ohm (Frisco, Texas) played the hero for the Bulldogs on Saturday, stepping to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second in the eighth inning. She laced a base hit to left center, scoring
Megan Armistead from second base to give the Bulldogs the win.
Â
The Bulldogs showed some resiliency in snatching the extra-inning win after dropping the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 2-0. The split moved TLU's record to 19-7 on the year and 11-1 in the SCAC as the first-game loss snapped a 10-game SCAC winning streak. The two teams remain atop the conference standings, with the Bulldogs still holding a one-game advantage in the loss column as Trinity's conference record moved to 8-2 on the year.
Â
TLU's entire eighth-inning rally took place with two outs.
Jessica Garcia struck out to lead off the inning, followed by a
Maegan Taylor fly out to centerfield. With two outs,
Hope Estes kept the inning alive, driving an off-speed pitch up the middle for a base hit. After Armistead entered the game to pinch run for Estes,
Jennifer Gallagher, who hit the walk-off homerun to beat Pacific Lutheran on Thursday, laced a sharp single to the shortstop. Those two clutch hits gave Ohm the stage for her heroics.
Â
Samantha Yenne (Lake Jackson, Texas) came up clutch for the Bulldogs, as well. The freshman came away with the win in the circle in the second game, entering in relief of
Kimberly Leschber and throwing the game's final four innings without allowing a run and giving up just three hits. Yenne struck out three in the game to move to 5-2 on the year.
Â
Leschber (Thorndale, Texas) was solid in her start, going four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. The junior struck out two batters on the day.
Â
Texas Lutheran jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of some defensive miscues from the Tigers to take the early lead.
Ashley Jacobsen scored on a wild pitch before
Jacquelyn Brown came around to score on the same play, advancing to third on the wild pitch and scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
Â
The Bulldogs held that 2-0 advantage until the fourth inning. The Tigers plated one across in the frame, scoring on a throwing error by Bulldog third baseman Taylor. They would even the score up at 2-2 in the fifth inning behind an RBI single from Caitlynn Dykes.
Â
The score remained deadlocked, but it looked like the Bulldogs would win it in the seventh inning after getting runners to second and third with just one out.
Jacquelyn Brown stepped to the plate, but lined out to the shortstop before
Grace Estes ended the inning with a groundout.
Â
In the first game, the Bulldogs were shutout for the first time this season. The offense was held to just four hits by Trinity's Kaci Wellik, who went the distance, striking out seven and throwing the complete game.
Â
The Bulldogs never strung more than one hit together in an inning against Wellick and while the TLU pitching was solid, Trinity managed to plate two runs in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference.
Â
Taylor Grissom (Spring, Texas) got the start for the Bulldogs and dropped to 4-2 with the loss. She pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. The sophomore struck out two on the day.
Â
Yenne entered the game in the sixth and pitched two shutout innings, allowing just one hit and a walk.
Â
The Bulldogs can still put some distance between them and the Tigers for first place in the SCAC tomorrow. The two teams meet up for another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Kruse Stadium. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
