TLU Women's Basketball within one game of NCAA tourney after semifinal win

SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs moved within one victory of their first-ever NCAA Division III tournament appearance with a 63-58 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal win Saturday over Schreiner.

With the victory in Trinity University's Sams Gymnasium, SCAC tournament top-seed TLU matched the school-record for wins in a season with 22 and extended its school-record win streak to 13 games.

The Bulldogs improved to 22-5 overall. Schreiner finished its season at 15-12 overall. TLU took all three meetings against Schreiner in 2013-14.

TLU produced a 17-4 run to close the first half to secure a 35-19 halftime lead over the Mountaineers.

The Bulldogs led by 27, at 62-35, with 4:25 to play before Schreiner made things interesting with a late rally against some of TLU's reserves. TLU played all 15 players in uniform Saturday against the Mountaineers.

The Bulldogs held Schreiner to 32 percent shooting in the first half and to 30.9 percent for the entire game. The conference's leading scorer, Schreiner's Lindsey Peterson, was held to 2-for-11 shooting and to seven total points.

Karisa Cantu (San Antonio/MacArthur) and Dalia Camargo (Mission/Mission) each scored 17 for the Bulldogs. Cantu, a junior, added two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Camargo, a senior, dished out three assists and tallied two steals.

TLU junior center Chelsey Stolle (Falls City/Falls City) scored seven, collected seven rebounds and blocked three shots.

The Bulldogs advance to the 2 p.m. Sunday SCAC Championship final against either No. 2 seed Trinity or No. 6 seed University of Dallas.

The Bulldogs split the two regular-season games with Trinity and swept the season series with Dallas.

TLU matched the 1984-85 Bulldog squad for the single-season wins record. The 1984-85 Bulldogs produced an overall record of 22-6 and won the Big State Conference Championship.

The 1984-85 Big State Conference title is the only conference title in TLU Women's Basketball history.

The Bulldogs likely need a win Sunday to advance to the NCAA DIII tournament. An at-large bid to the NCAA tournament is unlikely since TLU has not been ranked in any of the South Region rankings, including the most recent poll, this season.

Only the winner of the SCAC Championship receives the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will have the radio call Sunday, with pre-game coverage starting at 1:50 p.m. An audio-only webcast by KWED will be available at seguintoday.com.
