VICTORIA, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran softball team dropped a pair of games to Houston-Victoria on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-6 in the first game and 6-4 in the second game of a doubleheader at the Youth Sports Complex.
Â
The pair of losses drops the Bulldogs' record to 2-4 on the year. The two games were their first in more than a week and a half.
Â
In the first game, the Bulldogs struck first, going ahead 1-0 in the first inning after
Taylor Yancey (Magnolia, Texas) ripped an RBI double that scored
Ashley Jacobsen. After Houston-Victoria evened things up in the second, the Bulldogs retook the lead in the third, scoring three runs. Two of those runs came on a
Heather Hummel (Houston, Texas) single that score
Jaime Ohm and Jacobsen.
Â
The Jaguars would score the next nine runs though, scoring two in the third and seven in a big fourth inning to open the game up. That fourth inning was capped off with three runs scoring after Ohm dropped a fly ball with the bases loaded that would have ended the inning.
Â
The Bulldogs scored two in the sixth inning to try and mount a comeback, with Jacobsen (Marion, Texas) driving what turned out to be their final run of the game off an RBI double.
Â
Freshman
Samantha Yenne (Lake Jackson, Texas), fresh off a SCAC Pitcher of the Week award, took the loss in game one. She threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and a walk. She did strike out three Jaguars on the day.
Â
In the second game, the Bulldogs once again took an early lead, jumping ahead 2-0 after notching a run off an error in the first and scratching another in the second off a
Jacquelyn Brown (Vidor, Texas) RBI single.
Â
The Jaguars tied the game back up at 2-2 in their half of the second, stealing home to score their first run and scoring on a Bulldog fielding error for the second. They would take a two-run lead in the third off RBI singles from Krissa Powell and Kristine Droz.
Â
The Bulldogs would scratch closer in the fourth after
Megan Armistead (Montgomery, Texas) scored on a throwing error after a Jacobsen single. That would be the closest the Bulldogs would get though, as Houston-Victoria scored twice in the fourth to open up a 6-3 lead.
Â
Grace Estes (Willis, Texas) drove in a run in the sixth, scoring Armistead after an RBI single.
Â
Kimberly Leschber (Thorndale, Texas) took the loss in the circle for TLU and moved to 1-2 on the season with the loss. She threw the game's first three innings and gave up four earned runs (five total) on 10 hits.
Amanda Lochte (Fredericksburg, Texas) finished off the game for the Bulldogs, throwing the final three innings and allowed just one run on two hits.
Â
Jacobsen was the offensive star Saturday for the Bulldogs, finishing 5-for-8 from the plate in the two games with two doubles, one RBI and three runs scored. TLU finished with 19 hits on the day, including five doubles.
Â
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, March 5 when they play their home opener against Calumet College of St. Joseph. The doubleheader will start at 11 a.m. and will be played at New Braunfels Canyon High School.
