TYLER, Texas -- Texas Lutheran and Louisiana State-Alexandria played a pair of extra-inning baseball games Saturday at the University of Texas at Tyler, and each team came away with a one-run, walk-off victory.
LSU-Alexandria won the early game 1-0, and TLU took the second game 4-3.
LSU-Alexandria's overall record moved to 5-4, and TLU's record went to 5-2 with the non-conference split at Irwin Field.
In the early game, scheduled for seven innings, TLU right-hander
Dwayne Snider (New Caney/New Caney) and LSU-A right-hander Kirk Savoy matched scoreless innings until the eighth. Snider retired the first two batters of the eighth but departed with runners on first and second after a single and walk.
New TLU pitcher
Brett Clark (Vancouver, B.C./Semiahmoo Secondary) was greeted by Keagan Kratzer, who singled to left field and drove home Michael Collado for the win.
The Bulldogs managed just three hits against Savoy. Two of the hits came off the bat of
Christian DeBlanc (Kingwood/Kingwood). Savoy struck out six and worked around four walks and three hit batters.
Snider took the loss to fall to 1-1. He struck out one, walked three and gave up seven hits.
In game two, with TLU as the home team, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on a
Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson) RBI double and a 2-0 lead on a
Lincoln Baylor (Schertz/Clemens) RBI single.
The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth, to take a 3-2 lead, on a
Derek Kanas (New Braunfels/Canyon) single.
After the Generals forced extra innings with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, TLU ended the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from DeBlanc. The DeBlanc base-hit brought home
Holden Bryant (Bullard/Bullard).
Kanas, DeBlanc and
Keaton Bohrmann each collected a pair of hits in the win for TLU.
Thomas Harwell (Houston/Atascocita) pitched three innings in relief of
Kellen McGriff (Humble/Humble), who pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs.
Harwell kept the Generals scoreless in the eighth and picked up his first win of 2014. He struck out one and allowed just one hit.
The Bulldogs return home to Katt-Isbel Field for Tuesday's 2 p.m. non-conference game with University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. TLU will have live video and stats for the single, nine-inning game on tlubulldogs.com.
