SEGUIN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, fresh off their first win of the season, hit the Memorial Gymnasium court tonight against former conference rival McMurry University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. TLU will have live video and stats from tlubulldogs.com.
TLU and McMurry played together in the American Southwest Conference from the 2000-01 season up to the 2011-12 season. McMurry made a brief transition to NCAA Division II, but the War Hawks are back in transition to NCAA DIII and are again members of the ASC.
TLU departed the ASC following the 2012-13 season and joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, another league of the NCAA Division III.
Â
Last time out for TLU, the Bulldogs gave Head Coach
Jimmy Smith his first win as the leader of the TLU Men's Basketball program in a 73-67 road win Friday over Millsaps College (Miss.).
Â
The Bulldogs and Majors played in Jackson, Miss. It was the third all-time meeting between the two programs. TLU now holds a 3-0 edge in the series.
Â
For Smith, it was career win No. 37. Smith is in his third season as a head coach at the collegiate level. He spent the prior two seasons at Schreiner University, where he compiled a record of 36-37 after inheriting a program that was 92-253 (.270 win pct.) in its NCAA DIII era prior to Smith's arrival.
Â
The win over Millsaps snapped an overall program losing streak of six games. The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak to NCAA DIII programs and a five-game overall losing skid on the road.
Â
The Bulldogs were a perfect 19-for-19 at the free throw line on Friday in the win over Millsaps. The last time TLU made 19 free throws and shot over 90 percent at the line was a Jan. 28, 2012 game at McMurry - a 67-64 Bulldog win in Abilene, Texas.
Â
TLU sophomore point guard
Sterling Holmes was the Bulldogs' nominee for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week after he scored a TLU personal best 21 points in the road win over Millsaps.
Â
Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian/Richland College) scored his 21 points on 6-of-8 overall shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from the three-point line. He added a 6-for-6 performance at the foul line. He dished out two assists and only turned the ball over once. He is second on the team in scoring average, at 10.8 points per game. He has started all five contests.
Â
Fellow sophomore guard
Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) helped the Bulldogs' cause in Jackson, Miss. with a 19-point scoring performance that included a season-best five three-pointers. All five of Kouremetis' made field goals came from behind the arc. He added a 4-for-4 performance at the foul line and dished out three assists.
Â
Freshman forward
Harris Jowell (Brock/Brock) had a career-high 12 points in the road win. He was 5-for-5 from the field and had two dunks. He added three rebounds (two on the offensive glass).
Â
After the McMurry game tonight (Tuesday), the Bulldogs hit the road again for an exhibition game against NCAA Division I foe Texas State. The game will count as a regular-season game for the Bobcats. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in San Marcos at Strahan Coliseum.
