Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball caps regular season with Saturday sweep in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran volleyball program capped off the regular season with wins against Texas-Tyler and Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday at the final day of the Southwestern Boo Classic.

The pair of wins improved the Bulldogs' record to 19-12 on the year. The two non-conference wins means TLU finished with a 13-4 non-conference record.

The Bulldogs opened the day up with their second sweep of Texas-Tyler this season. After notching an early-season sweep of the Patriots, this time the Bulldogs turned in a 25-23, 25-21, 25-16 win.

The Bulldogs stonewalled the Patriots all day at the net, recording 10 blocks in the three sets. Those 10 blocks are the second most TLU has recorded this season. The only match with more was a five-set loss to Claremont Mudd-Scripps in which TLU notched 12.

Leading the way in the block parade was Carlie Childres (Leander, Texas). The redshirt-sophomore finished with eight blocks (two solo, eight assists), giving her the most any Bulldog has tallied in a match this season.

Mackenzie Benson (Cibolo, Texas) also enjoyed a dominant match up front, finishing with five blocks to go along with eight kills.

Kristin Fording (San Antonio, Texas) was the only Bulldog with double-figure kills, finishing with 11 on .152 hitting. As a team, the Bulldogs finished with .205 hitting while holding the Patriots to just .135.

Megan Lee (Universal City, Texas), TLU's all-time career leader in digs, added to her own record by tallying 25 more digs against the Patriots.

The match started out with Texas-Tyler scoring the first three points to take an early lead. The Bulldogs used a 10-4 run to take a lead, before the teams trading points through the middle portion of the set. The big moment came from a 4-0 TLU run that gave the Bulldogs a 20-14 lead they would never relinquish.

The second set was a nail-biter, with neither team leading by more than two until late in the frame. There were seven lead changes in the frame, but the Bulldogs ended it with a 5-2 run.

The third set was tied 8-8 before TLU unleashed a 9-1 run to take control and cruise to a 25-16 win to finish off the sweep.

The weekend closed with a 24-26, 25-7, 25-23, 25-23 win over Our Lady of the Lake.

The Bulldogs bounced back from a tough first-set loss in which they held a 24-22 lead, needing just a point to go up 1-0. The character of the squad was revealed in the next set though, as the Bulldogs ended the frame on a 12-0 run to even the match up.

While the blocking game wasn't as strong as it was against the Patriots, the Bulldogs were back to their old ways of digging up seemingly every attack attempt. They finished with 79 digs and were led by Lee's 30.

Fording notched another double-double, her fourth straight. The sophomore tallied 18 digs to go along with her team-leading 14 kills.

Katie Darst (Euless, Texas) was solid in the final regular season game of her career, notching 25 assists and six digs. Kelcie Ingram (Cibolo, Texas) chipped in with 16 assists of her own.

The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the SCAC Volleyball Championship in Sherman, Texas next weekend. A tournament championship would give TLU an automatic big to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Action starts on Friday, Nov. 7 when the Bulldogs, the tournament's fifth seed, take on fourth-seeded Dallas in a quarterfinal matchup.
