Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Martinez's two goals lead Bulldogs to wild home win over Southwestern

SEGUIN â€" Alejandro Martinez scored twice, including a dramatic game winner in overtime on Friday, giving the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team a crucial 3-2 win over Southwestern.

It was a wild Friday afternoon at Gustafson Field, where the game featured huge momentum swings from both sides. Three goals were scored in the final six and a half minutes of regulation, including a two-goal comeback in the final five minutes for Southwestern.

In the end though, Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) put the Bulldogs through with a skillful game winner. He received the ball at the top of the box, beat a defender and held him off before getting off a shot that beat the Pirate keeper.

The goal gave the Bulldogs their third straight win when forced to go to overtime, improving their record to 6-6-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the SCAC. It also helped move them up the conference standings as the end of the season draws nearer. With the win, TLU now has 13 points in conference play, two points behind Dallas for fourth place and three points behind Southwestern for third.

Martinez, a sophomore forward, provided another dramatic goal earlier in the game. He put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 by scoring a goal off a free kick with 10 seconds left in the first half. The goal came off a Colin Nunley free kick that found the head of Martinez before he put it away.

The Pirates began turning up the pressure as the second half wore on, trying to find the equalizer. TLU was able to withstand the pressure and earn a corner kick in the 84th minute. The kick resulted in Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) finding enough space to pick out Lalo Ramirez wide open in front of goal to go ahead 2-0.

Armed with a 2-0 lead and the clock ticking away, it looked like the Bulldogs would pick up the huge win in regulation. But the Pirates had other plans as they quickly answered the Ramirez goal with one of their own less than a minute later. Clay Martin got on the end of a Zach Faulkner cross to put in Southwestern's first goal.

With the score back to just a one-goal TLU advantage, the Pirates finally found the equalizer with 26 seconds left on the clock. Michael Olivares picked off a Nathan Drouillard pass aimed for TLU keeper Jonathan Michael. Olivares managed to kick the ball around Michael before finishing into the open net.

The shots were relatively even between the teams. Southwestern ended up outshooting TLU 15-12, though the Bulldogs notched five shots on goal compared to four for the Pirates.

Michael (Coppell, Texas) earned the win in net for the Bulldogs, finishing up with two saves.

Texas Lutheran will finish up a four-game home stand by winning its third game of the four. The Bulldogs will face off against No. 3 Trinity at noon Sunday, Oct. 19 at Gustafson Field. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
