SEGUIN â€" The Texas Lutheran men's soccer went into halftime tied 1-1 with No. 3 Trinity, but a goal from Victor Araujo early in the second half handed the Bulldogs the tough 2-1 home loss on Sunday.
Â
It was the second time this season the Bulldogs lost to Trinity by the slimmest of margins, as they lost 1-0 in San Antonio earlier in the year. The loss dropped TLU's record to 6-7-1 overall and 4-6-1 in SCAC play.
Â
Trinity opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Roberto Camargo put away the goal, volleying in a shot from the top of the box after Texas Lutheran tried to clear away a corner kick.
Â
The Bulldogs evened up the score late in the half. A Trinity foul set up a free kick for TLU from just inside the midfield stripe.
Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) took the kick and lifted a ball that glanced off a Trinity player and off the far post. The ball bounced back into play and onto the foot of
Lalo Ramirez (Round Rock, Texas) who finished it for his second goal of the season, and his second in as many games.
Â
Play was even for most of the first half, with both teams finding a few scoring chances. The Bulldogs were outshot 6-4, with both teams notching two shots on goal for the period.
Â
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers retook the lead in the 51st minute thanks to Araujo. He got on the end of a Brent Mandelkorn pass and finished from 10 yards out.
Â
The Bulldogs were outshot 10-3 in the second half. They were outshot 16-7 for the contest, with
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) making five total saves. Four of those saves came in the second half. Twice he had to extend himself fully, diving through the air to hold the Tigers without a third goal.
Â
The conclusion of the regular season is fast approaching, with just three more conference games remaining on the Bulldogs' schedule before they host the SCAC Men's Soccer Championship. Next up, they will play their final two road games of the season, taking on Centenary at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 before matching up against Colorado College next Sunday at noon.
