SEGUIN â€" The high tension of overtime soccer may not be new to Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer, having now played in six overtime affairs this year, but scoring that game-winning goal to end it never stops being exciting.
Â
On Friday, it was
Isaac Lopez who sent the Bulldogs home happy after his overtime goal in the 93rd minute propelled TLU to a 1-0 home win over Austin College.
Â
Lopez's goal came off the work of
Colin Nunley and
Andrew Leibl, who got the play started with a long pass that opened up Nunley down the sideline. Nunley crossed the ball into the box toward the near post where he found a running Lopez for the game winner.
Â
It was the second time in a week the Bulldogs had defeated Austin College in overtime. Last Friday, they again scored the game's only goal in the first overtime period to win it.
Â
The win improved Texas Lutheran's record to 5-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the SCAC. Austin College dropped to 0-9-3 overall and 0-6-1 in conference action.
Â
The Bulldogs had plenty of chances to get on the scoreboard before Lopez's overtime theatrics. They outshot the 'Roos 23-8 for the game and recorded 12 shots on goal compared to just one for Austin College.
Â
The pressure really mounted in the second half, where TLU managed 14 total shots while holding the 'Roos to four.
Â
The Bulldogs' best chance to score before overtime came late in the second half. A corner kick set up a frantic moment that saw three different Bulldog headers towards the goal. The first two were blocked and the third hit the crossbar and went out of play.
Â
Texas Lutheran goalkeeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) recorded his sixth shutout of the year on Friday. The junior only needed to make one save on the day.
Â
The Bulldogs will play their second game in this four-game home stand on Sunday afternoon. They will take on Dallas at noon as they look to avenge a 1-0 loss just a week ago to the Crusaders. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.Â
