SHERMAN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran men's basketball team rode a big second half on its way to its second consecutive win, beating Austin College 93-71 on the road Sunday afternoon inside Hughey Gymnasium.
Â
The Bulldogs outscored the 'Roos 51-34 in the second half on their way to their second straight SCAC win, improving their record to 7-10 on the year and 2-5 in SCAC play. The 'Roos dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the SCAC.
Â
Texas Lutheran was scorching in the second half, shooting better than 62 percent from the field and knocking down 5-of-7 from long range. For the game, the Bulldogs shot almost 52 percent, marking the third straight contest they've been better than 50 percent from the field.
Â
Jordan Kouremetis and
Robert Watson Jr. were the two offensive spark plugs for the Bulldogs. Tallying 50 points between the two of them.
Â
Kouremetis (San Antonio, Texas), a freshman, continued his red-hot recent stretch of play, leading the team with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting. As has become habit over the last three games, a majority of his damage came in the second half. On Sunday, he scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half, making all five of his 3-pointers during the final 20 minutes of action.
Â
Watson Jr. (Corpus Christi, Texas) balanced his scoring a bit more between the two halves, scoring 12 of his 23 points in the first half. He finished the game 9-of-13 from the field while also filling up the box score with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Â
Kouremetis and Watson Jr. were the only Bulldogs to score in double figures, but
Troy Griffith and
Donte McGee notched nine points each, while
Garrett Wilkins chipped in with seven.
Joseph Richardson enjoyed a strong all-around floor game as the point guard finished up with six points, five rebounds and four assists.
Â
It wasn't just the offense that was clicking on Sunday for the Bulldogs either. The TLU defense held Austin College to just 39 percent shooting for the game and less than 28 percent shooting from three-point land.
Â
Early on Sunday, it didn't look like the game would develop into a Bulldog blowout, with Austin College scoring the first seven points of the contest to jump out to an early lead. With just over 10 minutes to go in the half, the 'Roos stretched their lead to what turned out to be their largest of the game, leading 19-10.
Â
The Bulldogs quickly worked their way back into the game, eventually taking the lead behind a 14-3 run. McGee (Victoria, Texas) scored five of those 14 points, but five Bulldogs scored during the run. TLU eventually closed the half by scoring five of the final six points to take a 42-37 lead into the locker room.
Â
The Bulldogs scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to open up a double-digit lead. That advantage would balloon to as large as 20 just six and a half minutes into the second half. The 'Roos were never able to get it closer than 17 the rest of the way.
Â
Texas Lutheran, having averaged more than 89 points per game over the last three contests, will look to keep the offense flowing when it comes home next weekend to host Centenary and Austin College in a rematch of this weekend's two games. The Bulldogs will matchup against the Gents at 6 p.m. Friday before taking on Austin College at 4 p.m. the next day. Live video and stats will be available via TLUBulldogs.com.
