SAN ANTONIO â€" Snapping a losing skid while playing a conference game on the road is a tough task. The Texas Lutheran men's basketball team couldn't quite pull it off on Friday, falling 64-37 to Trinity in the Bulldogs' first-ever SCAC road test.
Â
The Bulldogs' difficulty finding the bottom of the net was the story of the game as they were held to under 28 percent shooting for the game. Despite hanging tough in the first half and relying on their defense, the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the tough shooting night.
Â
TLU's 64 points matched its season low, which its scored four times now this year. The Bulldogs' 27.7 percent field goal shooting was also their lowest mark of the year for a team that rarely shoots below 40 percent in any game.
Â
The loss, the Bulldogs' fifth straight, sent their record to 5-7 on the year and 0-2 in their inaugural SCAC season. The Tigers improved to 7-6 (2-0 SCAC) with the win.
Â
Thomas Verm (Sealy, Texas) scored a team-high nine points for the game on 4-of-10 shooting. The junior center also pulled down six rebounds.
Â
Robert Watson Jr. (Corpus Christi, Texas) pulled down 12 rebounds and scored six points in his 22 minutes of action.
Â
Along with the cold shooting night, the Bulldogs struggled with ball security, turning it over a season-high 22 times compared to 15 for Trinity. Friday was also just the third time this year the Bulldogs have recorded fewer than 10 assists.
Â
The Tigers were led by a big day from Matt Selling. After entering Friday averaging 7.3 points per game, Selling exploded for 23 points coming mostly on the strength of a 5-for-8 shooting night from three-point land. The Tigers as a team made eight threes and shot 40 percent from deep while the Bulldogs made five 3-pointers and shot 33 percent.
Â
Bryce King (San Antonio, Texas), who entered Friday never having played more than six minutes in any game during his brief TLU career, played seven minutes in the first half and led the team in scoring with five points. Â The freshman finished with 12 minutes and three rebounds to go along with those five points.
Â
The Bulldogs were stymied all half by the Tigers' zone defense, shooting 7-of-23 from the field and 2-of-7 from three-point land in the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers, meanwhile, shot 44 percent from the field in the half.
Â
The Bulldogs found themselves down 22-10 with a little more than seven minutes left in the half. They dug themselves out of that hole, scoring nine straight points to cut the deficit to just three. King scored all five of his first-half points during that run.
Â
They couldn't get closer than that though as the Tigers scored the last eight points of the half to head to the locker room with a 30-19 advantage.
Â
The second half was a struggle for TLU as it shot 6-of-24 from the field and was limited to 18 points. The Tigers scored the first six points of the half and the Bulldogs could never get the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
Â
Texas Lutheran won't have long to dwell on the tough shooting night. The Bulldogs are back in action at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) in Georgetown, Texas for another road battle. This time, they will face off against Southwestern for the second time this season. In the first matchup, a nonconference affair, the Bulldogs were beat by just two points.
