GEORGETOWN, Texas --
Brent Peavy (Houston/St. Pius X) threw four touchdown passes (three to
Deion Barnes) as the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs delivered a 44-14 defeat to Southwestern University in the Pirates' first college football game since 1950.
Saturday evening at Georgetown ISD's Birkelbach Field, TLU opened a 24-0 lead in the third quarter as Barnes (Edna/Edna) caught his second scoring reception of the night. Barnes scored on a 4-yard pass in the second quarter, a 19-yard throw in the third, and a 7-yard connection in the fourth.
"We made some plays and that was good to see," said
Danny Padron, TLU's head coach. "We ran a lot of plays. We have some work to do, but overall we were pleased."
The Bulldogs ran 100 plays and rolled up 571 yards of total offense against the Pirates, a member with TLU in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
TLU's game Saturday was its first football contest in the SCAC. Southwestern, a veteran of the SCAC in all other sports, also made its SCAC football debut. The Bulldogs and Pirates last faced each other in football on Sept. 29, 1940. Southwestern won that contest long ago by a score of 27-9.
TLU (1-0, 1-0 SCAC) held Southwestern without a pass completion in the first half, but the Pirates (0-1, 0-1 SCAC) rallied in the second half to throw for 348 yards. Colton Shea caught nine passes for 258 yards and two scores for the Pirates. Dante Smith thew for 267 yards and two touchdowns.
Tyler Figol (New Braunfels/Canyon) caught a 24-yard pass from Peavy for a score in the second quarter. Three different Bulldogs -
Lewis Williams II (Houston/Klein Forest), Figol and
Cameron Peavy (Houston/St. Pius X) - had more than 60 yards receiving. Williams led TLU with nine receptions for 113 yards.
Running back
Dominique Hardaway (Lockhart/Lockhart) and linebacker
Jonathan Olonade also scored for the Bulldogs. Hardaway scored on a 1-yard run in the third, and Olonade (Houston/Alief Taylor) recovered a Southwestern fumble in endzone with 3:06 to play in the game. Olonade was credited with the forced fumble and the recovery.
Peavy threw for 308 yards and completed 32 of 45 passes. He was intercepted twice and sacked once. Peavy's four TD passes tied a career high.
TLU's
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) rushed for 81 yards on 12 carries in his collegiate debut.
"I think (Marquis) is going to be a great back for us," said Padron. "It is exciting to see him come around for us and have a good ball game."
TLU continues conference play next Saturday with a 6 p.m. road game at Trinity University in San Antonio. Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will have pre-game coverage at 5:30 p.m. Live video on tlubulldogs.com will be available free of charge.
