GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran volleyball team won three out of four matches over the weekend after beating Austin College and falling to No. 10 Colorado College 3-1 on Sunday.
Â
The split moved Texas Lutheran's record to 10-6 on the year and 4-3 in SCAC play.
Â
The first match of the day, a thrilling 25-14, 25-16, 16-25, 22-25, 16-14 win over Austin College, featured plenty of ups and downs.
Â
The Bulldogs came out of the gate strong against the 'Roos, winning the first two sets handedly. In fact, the Bulldogs never trailed either of those sets.
Â
It looked like TLU was on the verge of its third straight sweep, but Austin College battled back and gained some momentum, winning the next sets and forcing a fifth and decisive set.
Â
That final frame was the most hotly contested, with both teams trading punches and exchanging the lead. The final set featured five lead changes and a number of runs by both teams. The difference came late, with the Bulldogs down 13-9. With their backs against the wall, they scored seven of the next eight points to seal a victory.
Â
Texas Lutheran was led in that match by its outside hitters Venicia Spencer and
Brette Threadgill, who combined for 36 kills on .364 hitting. They were the only two Bulldogs to tally double-digit kills.
Â
Spencer (Grandview, Texas) led the way with a match-high 19 kills (.357 hitting), while Threadgill wasn't far behind with 17 kills (.371 hitting).
Â
Setters
Katie Darst (Euless, Texas) and
Manda Martin (Burnet, Texas) both notched 26 assists, while four Bulldogs reached double digits in digs.
Savannah Erskine (Burnet, Texas) led TLU in that category with a season-high 23 digs.
Â
The weekend concluded with a 22-25, 25-21, 15-25, 20-25 loss to No. 10-ranked Colorado College.
Â
The Bulldogs hit .153 as a team in that one, while Colorado College hit .160. Individually, TLU was led, once again, by Spencer and Threadgill.
Â
Spencer finished with 13 kills on .300 hitting, while Threadgill led the team in kills for the third time this weekend with 15 kills (.167 hitting).
Â
Martin, a senior, racked up 40 assists in the match, the most she's dished out all season.
Megan Lee and
Megan Dugie split duties in the back, with Lee (Universal City, Texas) recording 22 digs and Dugie (San Antonio, Texas) racking up 21.
Â
After a week off next week, the Bulldogs have just two more weekends (seven matches) remaining in the regular season. Things will kick back up again on Friday, Oct. 11. That weekend, the Bulldogs will host Schreiner, Trinity and Southwestern in a crucial SCAC showdown at Memorial Gym.
