GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team's second-half comeback bid fell just short in its 2-1 road loss against Southwestern on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After getting down 2-0 in the first half, the Bulldogs certainly made things interesting in the final 45 minutes thanks to an
Alejandro Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) goal in the 57th minute that cut the deficit in half.
Â
Martinez's goal, the freshman's first of his TLU career, came on a straight-on shot that ended up in the left netting.
Â
The Bulldogs would continue to push to find an equalizer and mustered two shots and two corner kicks over the game's final 30 minutes, but their efforts weren't enough as the Pirates held on for the win.
Â
The loss was Texas Lutheran's second consecutive after winning the first four games of the year. The Bulldogs now sit at 4-2 on the year and 1-2 in SCAC play.
Â
Southwestern opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a Steven Resnik goal. The Pirates pushed their lead to two with a goal by Andres Carreno-Mende in the 35th minute. Both Southwestern goals were assisted on by Michael Olivares.
Â
Bulldog sophomore keeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves while allowing the two first-half goals.
Â
The two teams both notched 12 total shots and seven shots on goal.
Â
The Texas Lutheran defense will look to get back to the form it had been in at the beginning of the season as conference play heats up. After allowing just one goal in the first four matches, the Bulldogs have allowed six scores over the last two games.
Â
They will have a chance to get things back on the winning track next weekend in front of a friendly TLU crowd. The Bulldogs will take on the University of Dallas on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. before hosting Colorado College at noon on Sunday, Sept. 29.
