Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late goal extends Bulldogs' season-opening winning streak

SEGUIN â€" The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team received a late goal from Tim Schaffer to give it a dramatic 1-0 win at home Friday afternoon against Schreiner in its first-ever SCAC matchup.

With the clock running out and the two teams looking like they were heading to overtime to decide things, Schaffer (New Braunfels, Texas) took the game into his hands. In the 85th minute, Schaffer began a long run down the middle of the field with the ball. After feigning a shot to buy some space, he took a shot with his right foot that sailed past the Schreiner goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Needless to say, Schaffer, a sophomore transfer from Houston Victoria, will always remember his first goal with Texas Lutheran.

After holding on for the remaining five minutes to secure the win, the Bulldogs extended their season-opening winning streak to four games, moving their record to 4-0 (1-0 SCAC) on the year. The start to 2013 is the Bulldogs' best since winning their first eight games in 2001.

Texas Lutheran will continue SCAC play in a week when it hits the road to take on Trinity at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.

The loss dropped Schreiner to 0-4-1 on the year and 0-1 in its inaugural SCAC season.

Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) recorded his second shutout of the season and made two saves on the day. The sophomore has allowed just one goal over more than 340 minutes this year, making 16 total saves (.941 save pct.).

The Bulldogs outshot Schreiner 24-8 Friday and recorded six shots on goal compared to two for Schreiner.

While TLU held possession for much of the contest, things really started to turn later in the second half with the Bulldogs putting seemingly constant pressure on the Schreiner defense.

Over the game's final 25 minutes, the Bulldogs tallied eight shots with one of those being Schaffer's game winner.
