Robert Watson Jr. posted his second double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Texas Lutheran fell 103-80 at Wayland Baptist Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Pioneer Holiday Classic.
Â
The offense wasn't a problem for the Bulldogs after finishing the contest shooting 43.5 percent from the floor. Unfortunately, they couldn't find enough stops on the defensive end as Wayland Baptist shot 53 percent on its way to those 103 total points, the most points TLU has given up this season.
Â
The loss, TLU's third straight, dropped the Bulldogs' record to 5-5. Wayland Baptist improved to 8-1 on the year.
Â
One of the big difference makers came from behind the arc where Wayland Baptist made 15 3-pointers and shot 50 percent while TLU shot 5-of-12 from deep. Saturday marked just the second time a Bulldog opponent has hit more than 10 threes and those 15 3-pointers are the most TLU has given up in a game this season.
Â
Watson Jr. (Corpus Christi, Texas) came away with his second double-double in four games. He tied for the team lead in points with
Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio, Texas), who scored 17 on 5-of-9 shooting and 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range.
Â
Kouremetis also sank all four of his free throw attempts. The Bulldogs overall enjoyed a stellar game from the line, making 15-of-16 attempts (93.8%).
Â
Thomas Verm (Sealy, Texas) finished up with 16 points and six rebounds while
Garrett Wilkins (Austin, Texas) also scored in double figures with 15 points.
Â
The Pioneers were led by Barry Johnson's 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He did almost all of his damage from behind the arc, draining 7-of-11 from downtown. Markus Monroe scored 14 points and added eight assists, while Kelly Lawson also scored 14 and pulled down nine rebounds.
Â
The Bulldogs started the game the way they wanted, jumping out to a 6-2 lead three minutes into the action. The lead wouldn't hold after Wayland Baptist answered with a 19-6 run to take a 21-12 lead with 11:30 left in the half. After the run, the Pioneers would use a nine-point spurt to take a 20-point lead. The halftime whistle sounded with WBU lead 53-32.
Â
TLU could never cut the deficit to anything less than 15 points despite shooting 50 percent in the second half and holding Wayland Baptist to 46.9 percent from the field.
Â
After playing two games in less than 24 hours, the Bulldogs will have a short break before tipping off SCAC play and the new year with a 2 p.m. home game against Schreiner on Saturday, Jan. 4.
