Jordan Kouremetis scored a career-high 18 points and
Robert Watson Jr. chipped in with a double-double on Tuesday night in an 81-66 home win for the Texas Lutheran men's basketball team over Open Bible College.
Â
The Bulldogs, behind Kouremetis's career night, battled back from an early 10-point deficit and outscored the Bruins 69-44 the rest of the way, stretching their winning streak to four games and improving their record to 5-2 on the year. The four-game winning streak is the Bulldogs' longest since winning four in a row during the 2011-12 campaign.
Â
Kouremetis (San Antonio, Texas) rewarded head coach Tommy Jones for inserting him into the starting lineup for the first time in his career, scoring that team-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Kouremetis, one of the team's most proficient outside shooters, did a lot of his damage from behind the arc, making 4-of-8 from deep. Those four 3-pointers are the most a Bulldog has hit in a game this season.
Â
Watson Jr. (Corpus Christi, Texas) had a strong night too, pouring in 15 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. Most of his production came in the second half where he scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds.
Â
Junior point guard
Joseph Richardson was another standout, running the Bulldogs' offense well all game and dishing out a career-high nine assists to go along with six points and five rebounds. He also limited the turnovers, recording just one against those nine assists.
Â
The Bruins came out of the gates strong and jumped out to a 10-point lead less than six minutes into the game behind some red-hot shooting from behind the arc. They made five of their first six 3-pointers in that six-minute span to get out to the double-digit advantage.
Â
Jones called a quick TLU timeout when the deficit grew to 10 and from there, the Bulldogs began chipping away. They scored the next seven points to cut the lead back down to just three points, eventually ending the half on a 16-6 run to going into the locker room up 43-37.
Â
Donte McGee (Victoria, Texas) was crucial to the Bulldog's first-half resurgence. Coming off the bench, he was the only Bulldog to reach double-digit scoring in the first half, pouring in 11 points on perfect 5-of-5 shooting. All five buckets came in the paint as he consistently put Open Bible College defenders on his back to got solid post position. McGee finished the game with 13 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds.
Â
After the Bruins' hot start from deep, the Bulldogs put the clamps down with their perimeter defense, limiting the Bruins to just 2-of-17 shooting from behind the arc the rest of the way.
Â
In fact, after the Bruins made six of their first eight shots in the game, the Bulldogs held them to 15-of-54 (27.8%) shooting the rest of the way.
Â
The Bulldogs came out of the locker room and scored the first four points of the second half, increasing their advantage to nine. A Kouremetis 3-pointer gave TLU its first double-digit advantage with less than 17 minutes to play.
Â
The Bruins would never get closer than seven the rest of the way as the Bulldogs eventually stretched their lead to as large as 24 with just under four minutes left. The Bruins would get back within 15 after Jones emptied his bench.
Â
A win in their next game would give the Bulldogs five straight wins for the first time since the 2004-05 season. They will have to earn that win on the road when they travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.Â
