Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer pushes on to semis behind Roberts' goal

SEGUIN, Texas â€" It took more than 98 minutes and 23 shots, but after finding a post, a crossbar and plenty of the goalkeeper's gloves, the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team finally found the back of the net to continue its season with a thrilling 1-0 win over Centenary on Friday.

Senior Miki Roberts (Canyon Lake, Texas) draped herself in glory for the Bulldogs, putting away the golden goal on a cross to the far post by Courtney Brooks (Adkins, Texas). Roberts headed the cross down into the bottom corner, past Centenary keeper Erica Coker for the game winner in overtime.

It was fitting that two seniors, players with the most experience playing in these tense situations provided the winning goal. For Roberts, it was her first goal of the season. The assist was Brooks' team-leading sixth of the year.

The win moved the Bulldogs (10-8-1, 6-5-1 SCAC) past the quarterfinals and into the semifinals in the 2013 SCAC Women's Soccer Championship. The Bulldogs will take on Southwestern, which gained a bye into the semis by earning the second seed in the tournament. The two teams will match up at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament's No. 1 seed Trinity will take on fifth-seeded Dallas at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Roberts' long-awaited goal came after Texas Lutheran had come within inches of scoring a few times earlier. The Bulldogs dominated play throughout, outshooting the Ladies 23-6 and recording eight shots on goal compared to two for Centenary.

In the first half, it looked like the Bulldogs would break through to take the lead when Sioned Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas) found herself in front of the net waiting for a cross to land. Kirkpatrick attempted to head the cross into net, but the ball struck the post instead.

Early in the second half, the Bulldogs produced another offensive rush. Vanessa Espinoza (San Antonio, Texas) had a great opportunity as she broke away down the right side, but her shot was turned away by Coker, who made seven saves on the day to keep Centenary in it.

Just a few minutes later, in the 60th minute, senior Courtney Farmer (Austin, Texas) cracked a shot that smashed the crossbar and bounced virtually straight down but stayed in play.

The Bulldogs' 23 total shots was the most they've recorded since tallying 33 in an 8-1 win over this same Centenary squad in mid-October.

In net for Texas Lutheran, Erin Rose produced her fifth shutout of the year. The freshman only had to make two saves on the afternoon with much of the play taking place in Centenary's third of the field.

Friday marked the third time Texas Lutheran has played into overtime. The Bulldogs remain undefeated in such situations, having notched two wins now to go along with one draw.
