Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Martinez's goal pulls Men's Soccer through to SCAC semis

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" Conference tournaments provide the moments that student-athletes and fans remember forever. Friday provided one of those moments for Alejandro Martinez and the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team after Martinez scored a mesmerizing overtime goal to push the Bulldogs into the semifinals of the SCAC Championship with a 1-0 win over Schreiner.

With five minutes left in the first overtime period, Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) took it upon himself to end things. The sophomore forward picked up the ball at the midfield stripe and dribbled down the middle, fending off tackles and finding a bit of open space. After holding off a final defender, Martinez took a shot that beat Schreiner keeper Blake Lawson and ended the game.

For Martinez, the goal, his fifth of the season, tied him for the team lead in that category. Remarkably, Friday's score also marked the fourth time he's scored a game-winning goal this year.

The win meant the Bulldogs' season continues as they push forward into the SCAC Championship semifinals against top-seeded Trinity. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs and Tigers, ranked No. 7 in the country, will match up at 5 p.m. on Saturday with the winner to play in the finals at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Texas Lutheran dominated most of the game, tallying 17 shots compared to just five for Schreiner. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, only five of those 17 shots were on goal.

As the game wore on, the Bulldogs' constant pressure in Schreiner's defensive-third of the field began to take its toll. In the overtime period, despite just playing five minutes, the Bulldogs launched four shots while holding the Mountaineers without one.

Texas Lutheran sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) recorded his eighth shutout of the season, making three saves to preserve the clean sheet. Those eight shutouts are the most in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs have displayed a good game plan against Schreiner all season. Friday marked the third time the game has ended with a 1-0 Bulldog victory. In those three games, TLU held the Mountaineers to 15 total shots.
