First-half goals too much for Men's Soccer to overcome in SCAC semis

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team battled hard, but couldn't overcome three first-half goals in its season-ending 3-0 loss to No. 10 Trinity in the semifinals of the SCAC Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday at Southwestern University.

Trinity scored three times in the first 45 minutes, including once as time was expiring to take control of the game.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs' final record to 11-8 overall and 7-7 in SCAC play.

The game's first goal came in the 10th minute after Texas Lutheran was called for a handball in the penalty area, creating a penalty kick opportunity for the Tigers. Victor Araujo put away the penalty kick to give Trinity the lead.

The Tigers would score again in the 34th minute on a goal by Jonny Lawson, which was assisted by Zac Treu.

The crushing third goal came in the 45th minute. With time expiring, Todd Edwards got on the end of a rebound and put the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Michael as the horn sounded.

The Bulldogs were held to three total shots on the night and two shots on goal. Trinity took 18 shots and put eight of those on goal.

Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) led the team with two shots. Andrew Welsch (Amarillo, Texas) took the Bulldogs' other shot.

Michael (Coppell, Texas), a sophomore, gave up the three goals in the first half, but played well on the day, making five total saves
