GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" After this weekend, it looks like some of Texas Lutheran's old American Southwest Conference rivals may be happy to know the Bulldogs are now members of the SCAC after the TLU volleyball squad took down two more ASC schools on Saturday to complete a three-match sweep of former conference opponents.
Â
On Saturday, the Bulldogs took down East Texas Baptist and Hardin-Simmons in five sets each. The pair of wins is made all the more impressive considering the two teams have a combined 28-8 record in the ASC and are tied for third.
Â
The two wins improved Texas Lutheran's record to 16-10 (7-7 SCAC) on the year. The weekend sweep ended the Bulldogs' regular season on a high note as they get ready to head into SCAC Championship play at Trinity. They will take on Austin College in the quarterfinals of the tournament at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. If they win, they play again that same day at 4:30 p.m. The championship is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Â
In Saturday's first match, the Bulldogs came away with a hard-fought 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-8 win over East Texas Baptist.
Â
The Bulldogs battled back from down two sets against the Tigers, despite being out-hit .234-.186.
Â
Texas Lutheran was led by
Brette Threadgill (Sinton, Texas), who hammered home 20 kills while hitting .237. She also notched six digs on the day.
Â
The only other Bulldog to tally double-digit kills was freshman middle blocker
Mackenzie Benson (Steele, Texas). She finished with 12 kills on .273 hitting while also tallying two blocks.
Â
Manda Martin (Burnet, Texas) was outstanding against the Tigers, running the offense and dishing out 32 assists. She tallied a double-double, notching 12 digs while also recording five kills.
Â
After finishing off East Texas Baptist, another five-set thriller awaited the Bulldogs in their 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13 win over Hardin-Simmons.
Â
The match came down to the final points and the Bulldogs found themselves down 13-12 with their backs against the wall. They answered the way a good team does though, rattling off three straight points to end the match. The final two points were attack errors by Hardin-Simmons.
Â
Texas Lutheran held Hardin-Simmons to .073 hitting while the Bulldogs finished the night hitting .101.
Â
One of the key players against Hardin-Simmons was junior libero
Megan Lee (Universal City, Texas), who finished with 26 digs to go along with two aces.
Â
Threadgill was once again the Bulldogs' leader in kills, tallying 15 more on .093 hitting. She was joined by
Vanecia Spencer (Grandview, Texas), who added 12 kills on .281 hitting.
