KERRVILLE, Texas â€"
Alejandro Martinez scored the game's only goal and the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team wrapped up its regular season on a high note with a 1-0 shutout on the road Friday against Schreiner.
Â
Martinez (Round Rock, Texas), a freshman forward, gave the Bulldogs the lead in the 28th minute of play. The goal was set up by junior
Andrew Welsch (Amarillo, Texas), his first assist of the season.
Â
The goal was Martinez's fourth of the year, good for third most on the team. He has shown a propensity for coming up with goals when his team needs them the most too, with three of the four goals being of the game-winning variety.
Â
The shutout improved the Bulldogs record to 10-7 on the year and 7-7 in SCAC competition. They had already secured the fourth-place spot in the conference standings and will go up against Austin College in the quarterfinals of the SCAC Men's Championship hosted by Southwestern in Georgetown, Texas.
Â
The loss dropped Schreiner to 4-12-3 overall on the year and 4-8-2 in conference action.
Â
Friday's game was controlled throughout by Texas Lutheran, which held Schreiner to just two total shots on the day. Only one of those shots was on target, making for a relatively stress-free day from Bulldog keeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas). The sophomore made one save in notching his seventh shutout of the season.
Â
The Bulldogs ended up outshooting Schreiner 12-2 while tallying four shots on target. Both
Irving Lopez (New Braunfels, Texas) and
Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) notched three shots, tying for the team lead in that category.
