Texas Lutheran erupts for 64-41 road win at East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, Texas -- Texas Lutheran quarterback Brent Peavy threw for a school-record tying six touchdowns - four to his twin brother Cameron - to lead the Bulldogs to a 64-41 road victory Saturday over East Texas Baptist.

TLU is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 1976.

ETBU dropped to 2-2 overall with the non-conference loss.
At ETBU's Ornelas Stadium, Brent Peavy (Houston/St. Pius X) threw for 416 yards and completed 28-of-46 passes. He also rushed for 82 yards on 11 carries. His 501 yards of total offense is the second-most by a Bulldog in TLU Football history. Former Bulldog quarterback Sean Salinas had 505 against East Texas Baptist in 2004.

Cameron Peavy caught 11 passes for 216 yards (two shy of the TLU single-game record, which he holds) and tied the school record for touchdowns in a game and touchdowns receiving in a game. Peavy shares the total touchdowns in a game mark (4) with three other Bulldogs. Last season against Sul Ross State, Cameron previously set the school record for TD receptions at four.
"(ETBU) played a lot of man," said Danny Padron, TLU's head football coach. "They had to put a person in the box to stop (the run). We put them in a bind because we ran the ball, that's what we did in the first half."

"We ran the ball a lot because they were out there playing the quick screen. When they got out of that, they started playing man. It opened up Cameron. It opened up (Tyler) Figol and some of our inside receivers. It's very tough to play man-to-man against our guys."

The Peavy twins connected on TD passes of 12, 9, 7 and 22 yards. The last Peavy-to-Peavy connection put the game out of reach, at 64-41, with 4:30 to play.

"We want to execute every time and take it play by play," said Brent Peavy. "Our offensive line held it down. Our receivers held it down. We knew what we had to do. We knew we had to put up massive points, massive yards, and that's what we did."
The Bulldog offensive line gave up one sack in 47 passing attempts. TLU put up a school-record 701 yards of total offense, rushing for 271 and throwing for 430.

ETBU cut the TLU lead to 47-41 with 6:19 to play in the third quarter, but the Tigers would not score again. The Bulldogs scored the last 17 points of the game. Tyler Brandenburg (Springs/Concordia Lutheran) kicked a 27-yard field goal, and Deion Barnes (Edna/Edna) and Cameron Peavy added TD receptions.

Barnes scored twice Saturday against the Tigers. He scored in the first quarter on a fumble recovery in the endzone. The recovery came after a Tiger interception and attempted interception return.

The two teams combined for 1,139 yards of total offense. TLU averaged 5.2 yards per rush and 14.8 per catch.
Sophomore running back A.J. Saucedo (San Antonio/Central Catholic) rushed 17 times for 97 yards, and freshman Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) rushed 12 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs capitalized on four ETBU turnovers. Two of the turnovers came on interceptions by TLU sophomore safety Drake Dowling (Katy/Katy).
"Our coaches came in with a great game plan all week," said Dowling. "Give credit to all the guys up front - Ethan (Powell), Brad (Snowden), all of them. They were just making the quarterback uncomfortable throwing it. God just put me in a position to make plays. I am thankful for that and for my teammates and coaches. They worked hard all week."
Junior defensive end Ethan Powell (Florence/Florence) recorded 10 total tackles, two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore safety Ty Johnson (Orange/Orangefield) added 10 tackles.

TLU plays for the outright Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title next Saturday against Austin College. TLU is 2-0 in league play with one game remaining on the conference schedule.

Game time in Seguin's Matador Stadium is 1 p.m. TLU will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com. KWED 1580 AM will have the audio call, with an audio-only broadcast on seguintoday.com.
