Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer can't overcome early deficit in 2-0 shutout against Pirates

SEGUIN â€" A pair of very early first-half goals spelled trouble for the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team in a 2-0 loss at Gustafson Field on Sunday to Southwestern.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs' record to 9-7 overall for the year and 6-7 in SCAC play. The loss was also their third in a row.

The damage on Sunday was done very early with Southwestern scoring two goals in the game's opening seven minutes. The first one came in the third minute and was scored by Paden Williams. The goal came after Southwestern's Zach Faulkner took a shot that rebounded away from Bulldog keeper Jonathan Michael. Williams picked up the rebound and finished the goal.

Just a few minutes later, in the seventh minute, the Pirates would strike again. This time it was Steven Resnik who found the back of the net off assists by Williams and Matthew Nickell.

After the early barrage of goals, the Bulldogs found their footing and played Southwestern tough the rest of the way. The two teams were almost even in shots with Southwestern holding a slight 13-12 advantage. The Bulldogs notched five shots on goal compared to seven for the Pirates.

Michael (Coppell, Texas) made fivesaves on the day and was solid after the early goals.

Offensively, the Bulldogs had four players tally two shots each. Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) led the team with two shots on goal.

Texas Lutheran will wrap up its regular season with a final conference road game against Schreiner. The Bulldogs are assured of the fourth seed in the SCAC Men's Soccer Championship no matter the result against Schreiner. Kick off against the Mountaineer is set for 3 p.m. in Kerrville.
