CLINTON, Miss. -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs kept their undefeated 2013 season intact with a thrilling 35-32 road win Saturday over Mississippi College.
The Bulldogs moved to 6-0 overall and won on the road for a sixth straight time dating back to last season. MC dropped to 3-4 overall. The Choctaws' three-game win streak came to an end.
The Bulldogs reached into their bag of tricks late in the fourth quarter. Needing a first down to run the clock down to less than 30 seconds, TLU executed a fake punt on 4th-and-1 from the its own 37-yard line with 2:22 remaining in the game.
Drake Dowling (Katy/Katy) took the short snap and rumbled for 21 yards down to the MC 42.
"When we got the call (for the fake punt), we were excited, but you can't do anything to let it be known," said junior safety
Adam McGuire, who delivered a key block on the fake. "Everything has to look exactly like it does every punt before that."
The Bulldogs ran three more offensive plays before punting back to MC with only 18 seconds play. MC's last offensive possession started on its own 8-yard line and lasted just two plays. McGuire (Houston/Cypress Falls) intercepted the final Choctaw pass of the game. McGuire recorded his second straight game with two interceptions. His interception in the first quarter led to the first TLU touchdown drive.
TLU, the champion of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, remained perfect in 2013 with the non-conference win over Mississippi College. TLU and MC played together in the American Southwest Conference from 1998 to 2012, and Saturday's game at MC's Robinson-Hale Stadium was the first non-conference contest between the two schools.
The Bulldogs' defense scored a touchdown for the second consecutive game. Dowling, the sophomore safety, picked up a fumble deep in TLU territory and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown.
The Dowling TD gave TLU a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs opened the game's scoring with a 1-yard run by quarterback
Brent Peavy (Houston/St. Pius X).
Peavy gave TLU a 21-7 lead in the second quarter when he hit
Lewis Williams II (Houston/Klein Forest) on a 55-yard touchdown pass. TLU took a 21-14 lead into the half.
Peavy did not play in the second half after suffering an apparent injury late in the second quarter. Sophomore
Trenton White (Sachse/Sachse) came out of the halftime and took every snap for the Bulldogs in the second half. Peavy was present on the sideline but did not re-enter the game.
White engineered two second-half scoring drives. Both drives ended with
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) touchdown runs. Barolle, a freshman, scored on an 8-yard run to cap an 8-play, 60-yard drive in the third quarter.
Barrolle raced to the endzone again in the fourth quarter. His 48-yard TD rush gave the Bulldogs a 35-24 lead with 10:59 to play in the game. The Barolle TD completed a 5-play, 87-yard drive that took 1:20 off the clock.
Barrolle ended the game with a career-best 128 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry.
"The offensive line did a great job tonight," said White. "They did what we knew they could do. This game pretty much goes on the shoulders of the offensive line tonight."
White completed nine of his 15 passes for 100 yards. The Bulldogs threw a total of 27 times, completed 17 passes and did not toss an interception. TLU did not turn the ball over all day, although the team fumbled three times (recovering the miscue each time).
The Choctaws never took the lead in the game but certainly made it interesting late. After a TLU drive stalled in MC territory on a disputed incomplete pass on the MC sideline, the Choctaws took over and drove 64 yards in six plays for the Jonathon Redd 19-yard rushing touchdown. The TD cut the Bulldogs' advantage to 35-32 with 4:01 to play.
Redd, the MC quarterback, rushed for 59 yards and two scores and threw for 230 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
TLU junior defensive end
Bryan Doolittle (Houston/Langham Creek) registered seven tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss. Dowling recorded eight tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass break-ups, and the fumble return for the touchdown.
Ty Johnson (Orange/Orangefield) collected 10 total tackles, with nine solo stops.
TLU is 6-0 for the first time since 1976, when the Bulldogs entered the NAIA-II national semifinal game at 10-0. The Bulldogs, with fourth-year head coach
Danny Padron, have won seven straight games dating back to last season.
The Bulldogs return home to Seguin's Matador Stadium for next Saturday's 1 p.m. contest with Louisiana College. TLU will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com. Seguin's KWED 1580 AM will have the radio call and an audio-only webcast at seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:30 p.m.
