Alejandro Martinez scored with just three minutes remaining to help the Texas Lutheran men's soccer program to a dramatic 2-1 win over Austin College on a rain-soaked Gustafson Field.
Â
With the game tied at 1-1, all signs seemed to be pointing towards an overtime affair before Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) put the Bulldogs in front with a goal. The game winner came off a long pass from
Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) which landed in front of Martinez and set him up for a breakaway chance. The goal was Martinez's third of the year.
Â
The dramatic win improved the Bulldogs' record to 8-4 on the year and 5-4 in SCAC play while dropping Austin College to 3-8-2 on the year and 3-5-1 in the SCAC.
Â
After almost a half of scoreless play, the scoring was opened up by Texas Lutheran courtesy of Lopez's team-leading fifth goal of the season. The goal came from a shot that ricocheted off several defenders and beat the Austin College goalkeeper.
Â
The goal was sweet revenge for Lopez, who had been stopped on a penalty kick earlier in the half.
Â
The one-goal advantage would not stand though with Austin College getting on the board via a Seth Windsor goal.
Â
The Bulldogs held the advantage in shots 14-8, but the two teams were tied with seven shots on goal each.
Â
Sophomore
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) got the win in goal for the Bulldogs. He recorded six saves on the day.
Â
The play was plenty physical with Austin College's Joey Alcocer being ejected with a red card in the 28th minute. The 'Roos were forced to play with 10 players the rest of the game. Two other yellow cards were awarded to Austin College players throughout the contest.
Â
Texas Lutheran will look to improve its conference standings and make it three straight wins as SCAC play continues on the road against Dallas at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.
