KERRVILLE, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 road victory over Schreiner, Sunday evening at Mountaineer Soccer Field. The Bulldogs improve to 1-4 while the Mountaineers fall to 1-3.
Sophomore
Jesus Carrillo's (San Antonio/Reagan) first goal of the season proved to be a game-winner while
Chris Cantu (Harlingen/Harlingen) collected his first career assist. Sophomore
Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) made six saves to record his first clean sheet of the year.
Overall, Schreiner outshot TLU 11-7, and had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had three corners compared to none for TLU.
The Bulldogs had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, but nothing came of it as the game remained scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Carrillo took advantage of one of the Bulldogs' only two shots in the half as he converted the pass from Cantu and won his one-on-one matchup to put TLU ahead.
Once the Bulldogs took the lead, Avila only had to make two more saves, securing the shutout.
Texas Lutheran will continue it's road trip on Friday, Sept. 18 as they travel to Abilene to face Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 PM. The match will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
