Throwers, Relays Highlight Day One of SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas Lutheran throwers dominance at the podium and the TLU 4x100m relay squad highlighted Texas Lutheran's day one performances at the 2024 SCAC Championships on Saturday in San Antonio on the campus of Trinity University. Texas Lutheran currently sits in third place with 83.5 points entering the meet's final event on Sunday. Colorado College leads in the standings with 115 points.

Texas Lutheran dominated across all throwing events on Saturday. Freshman Deserae Charles (Natchitoches, LA/Forney), who entered the shot put as the favorite to win, would earn her first career SCAC championship with an event winning mark of 12.27m. Sophomore Emagen Styra (Nordheim/Nordheim), last year's shot put champion, finished second (11.90m, 39' 0.5") and Julissa Rodriguez (Deer Park/Deer Park) completed the clean sweep for TLU in the shot put finishing third (11.60m, 38' 0.75").

Rodriguez, who has had a decorated career at the SCAC championships in her first two seasons, added to her collection - winning the hammer throw with a 44.35m (145' 6") mark. Kenna Kubenka (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) finished second with a 43.73m (143' 6") mark - adding to the impressive points haul from TLU throwers.

Freshman Briley Rother (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) finished third in the long jump with a 5.12m (16' 9.5") mark. Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) would also pick up points for the Bulldogs in the event with a season-best mark of 4.83m (15' 10.25").

The Texas Lutheran 4x100m relay team comprised of Taylor Norrell (Lake Jackson/Brazosport), Natalie Garcia (McAllen/McAllen), Leilani Lopez (San Antonio/St. Anthony Catholic), and Trinity Murdock (Katy/Paetow) lived up to their top billing, winning the 4x100m relay with a season-best time of 47.66 seconds, setting a new SCAC Championship record in the process. Murdock would also record a fourth place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 25.59 seconds.
