SEGUIN, Texas -- In a rematch of the most recent Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship final, Texas Lutheran scored in the final minute and edged Colorado College 3-2 Sunday at Gustafson Field.
The two teams met for the first time since the 2019 SCAC title game, won by TLU 3-1 on Nov. 10, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas.
Jared Esparza took a cross from
Luis Green and scored at the 89:07 mark. The goal was the second of the season for Esparza, a senior from Cibolo, Texas (Steele).
TLU moved to 4-3 overall and to 4-3 in the SCAC with the victory. CC dropped to 4-3-1 overall and to 4-2-1 in the SCAC.
Luis Green scored and had two assists for TLU. Green scored his 47th career goal at TLU. A two-time All-American and two-time SCAC Offensive Player of the Year, Green set a new personal best for assists in a match, with two.
Mile Montgomery gave CC a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 22nd minute. CC led 1-0 at the half.
TLU evened the match at 1-1 with a goal from
Nestor Ayala off an assist from Green. Ayala scored at the 54:34 mark.
Green then gave TLU its first lead of the match. He scored in the 61st minute with an assist from
Caleb McCausland, who found Green on a long pass down the middle of the field.
Kevin Peterson tied the match at 2-2 for CC with a shot in the 88th minute. Montgomery provided the assist.
CC had a slight edge in total shots, 16-14, and in shots on goal, 9-5.
Caleb Weed made seven saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
TLU returns to Gustafson Field next Saturday for Senior Day against Centenary College (La.). Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. Home team fans on the TLU player pass list are allowed into Gustafson Field. Each player is limited to four family members/friends.
