IRVING, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer had its 2017 season come to a close Friday when the team tied Austin College 0-0 but failed to advance in the conference tournament after being edged 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout.
At the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at the University of Dallas, the Bulldogs and Kangaroos played 110 minutes - 90 minutes of regulation plus two 10-minute overtimes - without either squad finding the back of the net.
TLU ends its season with an overall record of 5-10-4. Austin College is now 8-6-5.
On Dallas' Crusader Field, TLU put 14 shots on goal in regulation and two overtimes combined. Austin College had 12 shots on goal. Kangaroos keeper Joseph Khalaf stopped all 14 shots, and TLU keeper Brendan Soto saved all 12 Austin College shots on goal.
Overall, TLU finished with 26 total shots. Austin College had 27. Edgar Molina led TLU with seven shots total and five shots on goal.
The Bulldogs had several good scoring chances, including a great chance in the closing seconds of the first overtime. A TLU shot hit the crossbar but stayed out of the Austin goal.
In the penalty shootout, TLU missed its first shot but evened the shootout when Soto stopped the third AC offering. Through five rounds of the shootout, the penalty kick tally stood at 4-4.
In the first extra shootout round, the sixth round, TLU missed on a shot wide right. With a chance to win and send his team to the SCAC semifinal round, Chris Abad-Jacobi knocked home the penalty kick.
Austin College advances to meet top seed and defending champion Trinity at 11 a.m. Saturday in Irving.
