Bulldogs survive in penalty kicks to advance in SCAC Tournament

SHERMAN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran freshman goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez (Monterrey, Mexico/San Antonio Lee) made nine saves in regulation and the two overtimes combined and then turned away three shots in the penalty-kick shootout as the Bulldogs prevailed 5-4 against the University of Dallas.

The match, played Friday afternoon at Austin College, goes down as a draw with TLU advancing in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament by virtue of the penalty kicks.

The shootout went into the seventh round, and Dallas had a chance to win with its fifth shooter. But Rodriguez turned the shot away to stave off elimination.

After Miguel Candelario and Eduardo Lopez-Rivera scored for TLU in the sixth and seventh rounds to keep the Bulldogs in the running for a semifinal berth, Rodriguez stopped his third shot of the shootout to set off the TLU celebration.

TLU rallied in the shootout after starting the final session with two penalty-kick misses.

Guillermo Guerra, Victor Manzaba, David Ching, Candelario and Lopez-Rivera all knocked home PKs for TLU.

The Bulldogs moved their overall record to 7-11-1.

TLU advances to Saturday's 1:30 p.m. match against No. 14-ranked Colorado College. The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs twice in the regular season.

Dallas' season comes to a close with an overall mark of 7-9-3.

TLU finished the match with 20 total shots. Dallas took 18.

Tino Gamueda made four saves for the Crusaders.
