SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Friday, following
Isaac Lopez's two goals to a 2-0 win over the University of Dallas.
Â
Entering the tournament as the five seed, the win kept the Bulldogs' season alive and advanced them to a semifinal matchup against top-seeded Trinity at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 8). The Bulldogs will be looking to continue their revenge tour after avenging two regular-season losses to Dallas this year. They will be looking to do the same against Trinity, losing twice by just one goal.
Â
The Bulldogs broke the score open in just the 18th minute on the strong work of
Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas). The sophomore dribbled into the penalty box, put a move on a Dallas defender and earned a penalty kick. Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) took the kick and calmly put the ball into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs the lead.
Â
Lopez and the Bulldogs doubled their advantage in the second half, with
Jerry Kent (Brenham, Texas) finding Lopez with a short cross in the box. Lopez, a junior midfielder, took the pass and finished it for his team-best sixth goal of the season.
Â
The Bulldogs dominated both possession and the shot count, finishing up with 14 shots compared to five for the Crusaders. TLU managed eight shots on target and held Dallas to two. The difference in shots was even starker in the first half, with the Bulldogs tallying nine total shots while limiting Dallas to one, and none on goal.
Â
Texas Lutheran goalkeeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) notched his ninth shutout of the season on Friday, making the two saves required of him. He has now lowered his goals-against average to 0.76, the third best in the SCAC.
Â
Lopez led the team with six shots and three shots on goal, although
Alejandro Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) wasn't far behind with four shots and two on goal.
